Discussion:
HOV, not HOT, Lanes Needed

An HOV link between Springfield and Tysons Corner is desparately
needed, as well as transit services between these two points. The
traffic is horrible, and currently there are no solutions addressing
this problem. HOT is not the way to go because the lanes will fill
with single paying drivers before people will actually reduce traffic
by carpooling and vanpooling. Also, Metrobus service would be made
possible if this missing link between the I-395 and I-66 HOV corridors
were completed. I know politicians are eager for transportation
revenue by charging for additional lanes, but I say the toll should be
imposed on the *regular* lanes, just for people insisting on driving
alone as bas as our traffic is. It's a shame there isn't more debate
about this going on in public -- most people just sit in their cars
wondering why the traffic is so bad and don't bother actually doing
anything about it.

Previous proposals to widen the Beltway in that area involved tearing
down the Dunn Loring Metro station. (I don't know whether current
proposals do so.)
I have read this statement from you before. However I don't recall
you ever citing the source of this proposal. A study to add 4 lane
barrier separated HOV to the Capitol Beltway VA I-495 did not
disturb Dunn Loring (K07) station. It only required lengthening of
the pedestrian bridge from the entrance to the station mezzanine
that cross the eastbound lanes od VA I-66.
