I hope nobody minds if I post about DC instead of Portland in this
newsgroup.

I hear that plans to widen the Beltway between the I-395 "mixing bowl"
and the I-66 junction are being brought back. This time the plan is
to charge tolls for non-HOV vehicles.

What effects will this have on the Dunn Loring Metro station? On the
W&OD trail? Thanks.

I hope someone knows the answer to these questions. Isn't it true
that this is one of the places where Beltway widening wouldn't have
much effect on its surroundings? Perhaps all the extra lanes could
feed right onto I-66. As for the W&OD trail, they could straighten
it out (return it to the right of way without an on-street detour)
as part of the project. That said, I'm opposed to piecemeal
highway expansion, it will, of course, do nothing but increase
the pressure to widen 66, and simultaneously obviate any supposed
benefits of doing so by introducing even more cars into the picture!
