Sorry to hear about those problems, John, I didn't know before this that
occurred. I hope that things will be restored back to normal soon.
Not going to rebuild, going to sell the property. Third time it's
flooded sense I have lived in North Beach, this time being the worst.
Have no desire to live through another flood.
I didn't realize that your house was that close to sea level. North
Beach is a pretty bayfront town, but being flooded like that would be
the pits.
I had not had a chance to survey damages others suffered until
yesterday when I when to get some other stuff out of the house. A
number of houses along Atlantic Avenue were condemned and are
uninhabitable, others suffered lesser damages. Most of the board
walk was damaged to one extent or another the fishing pier was
also damaged.
I had some parts of the board walk in my back yard.
My house suffered no structural damage but the hard wood floors under
the carpet in the bedrooms swelled so much that it lifted off the
floor joistes.
All and all I suffered less losses then others did.
My parents are on San Domingo Creek, and the storm surge reached the
foundation of the house, and they said it was like being on an island
with water all around the house, and with wind driven waves rolling in
from the creek (which normally ranges from 1/4 to 1/2 mile wide), and it
was hours later that the water began to recede very slowly. Other than
several small trees down, they had no real damage.
When I got home around 2200 on 09 18 2003 water was already more
then a foot deep on my property. My Mother woke me up around 0530
09 19 2003, I looked over the edge of my bed and saw water on the
floor. Winds were not that bad. Went back to sleep until the sun
came up and evacuated my mother up to my brother house around 0730.
Hopefully your car was on higher ground when the water came in. :-)
Actually the water had already started to come up when I got home
from my courier duties at around 2200. I could not have parked my
car in my driveway if I wanted to. Parked around the corner on
higher ground.
Here are the pictures I took;

To say that I was stunned would be an understatement---I'm so glad you're
ok....

I shot that one just for you. I had to shoot about 12 images before
I got one that was good enough publish. The time that I was in
Baltimore when I took that picture the wind and rain was not very
heavy. Oh and by the way, the image is of the sign on the north
Hamburg Street side of the stadium.
